Out-a-Time

My favorite theme park ride of all time was Back to the Future at Universal Studios Florida. I say "was" because in their infinite wisdom, Universal has closed BTTF for a reported Simpson's ride.

D'oh!

Apparently the current ownership felt Back to the Future was a movie that current guests no longer identified with. This was despite continued strong attendance and one of the highest ratings of any ride in the park.

I last rode BTTF in 2003 with my then nine year old son. We took the time journey twice that day. I wish we could have ridden it this year, but the ride closed three weeks before we arrived in Orlando.

There are a number of Back to the Future Ride videos on YouTube. This one is the cleanest and gives you an idea of the story, but it doesn't give you any indication of how great the actual ride was.

In other words, this video is so smooth you would think the ride was calm. Far from it. This person must have been an employee and was able to place the camera on a tripod in the theatre (after closing). No way this was taken from the car. I have a video I took shortly after the ride opened in the early nineties. It was impossible to hold the camera still.

Back to the Future had a great pre-show, great storyline, cool ride vehicles and the actual simulation was a blast as you dove and spun through time.

I don't think there is another ride like it.

Thanks Doc (and Biff).
