The Charlotte Hornets were a big deal, and I was a huge fan. That was the only time I've bothered to have season tickets to anything. There was nothing quite like going to a sold out Charlotte Coliseum with 23,000 people cheering on the Hornets.
At that time George Shinn was a hero. We all know now George is no longer a hero. His life unraveled in Charlotte and he took his team and left town. That story is well documented in other places, so I won't cover it here.
When the Hornets left they took a part of Charlotte's heart. Another NBA team came to town, but it's just a team. No one really cares about the Bobcats, everyone loved the Hornets.
When I learned they were rebuilding on the site of George Shinn's former home, and the Hugo the Hornet pool was destined to be a victim of that construction, I had to go by and pay final respects to the greatest sports franchise to call Charlotte home.
There are other teams in this area, and they may at some point be wildly successful, but there will only be one Charlotte Hornets.
